This week on Houzz: Which room caused quite a stir - We recently asked how you refer to your common living space. There was much debate about what to call, especially when international Houzzers joined. Some of you have clear ideas, while others do not see what difference it makes. So, is what you call your living room defined by the function? By history? By culture? Here's what you had to say.

"From experience it depends more what country you are from. In Australia, we tend to have living rooms, people here in the UK living rooms (or front rooms). Words say a little about the culture. " stellahome

"in an old house, the front chamber and the living room were separated ... and the living room was down the pub." Finn Koefoed -Nielsen

"Whatever care what people call. It's just a room! My parents and both sets of grandparents are not particularly big houses, but the "drawing room" was just "good room" where the piano was, and the children were not allowed to make a mess / game. It was the room to receive visitors in our home and was kept well always tidy. No TV in it, either in practice, we use it to "deprive" play the piano or sometimes to read, study or perhaps play a game or listen to music in peace. noc1975

"We have a living room and a living room. The lounge is used informally, children play in it, the family is around the stove in winter in it and it is used for informal visits. The living room is more formal in order and decoration, and used to host large gatherings or official visitors. The piano is there too. It depends on whether you eat in the kitchen or the dining room, because everything revolves around food. gravel41

"front room" is two Victorian -up two down. The first room was at the front (of course) and kitchen (dining room, too) and scullery were behind. Sam Hill

have always said "living room" when I lived in the US, but I adopted the word [lounge] used by the family of my English husband. ' 163hrd

"drawing room" is very elegant, but it is acceptable if you have a very large house. It would sound a bit pretentious in half a twin! maggieandrichard

'Only airports and hotels have lounges told me ;-). scoobyjoss
